Mercy
Ministries of Colorado was founded by Fred and Karleen Dewey in 1986.
They saw the need to assist the poor children of this world in Jesus'
name. In the late 80's, they took in foster children, gave out food
boxes to needy families, and taught parenting skills to Denver's
inter-city teen mothers. MM also began supporting the EvanFree
Christian Child Development Centers of Cebu, in the Philippines.
Currently there are 12 centers on the island of Cebu, and MM continues
to sponsor three of them. In the past twenty years, thousands of
poor children have graduated from these centers and gone on to attend
elementary school. They were given a good start in life and hope for
their future.
In
1991, Fred and Karleen traveled to Romania to evaluate the needs of
Romanian orphans. Shocked by the neglectful conditions of the children,
the Deweys took teams to Romania to teach orphanage staff and prepare
foster families to take the children into their families. In 2000, the
Loving Arms team from Mercy Ministries began annual mission trips to
Marghita, Romania, to offer summer camps, held in the Black Forest of
Transylvania, to teen orphans.
After
retiring, Fred and Karleen moved to Marghita, Romania in 2005 where
they have a "hands on" ministry to teen orphans. They partner with
Fundatia Crestina Elim (FCE), a Christian Romanian foundation, and they
are very involved in leadership roles. FCE directly cares for more than
300 children. Seventy children and youth are daily under FCE's care
through a private orphanage, transit homes, foster care and the Final
Help program. The purpose of Mercy Ministries and FCE is to provide a
safe environment where children can feel loved and cared for, and
also to offer them hope for their future. We encourage the orphans
to believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
